You will see a difference...

For many across the country this week marks the halfway point into the January health kick as we all hope to start 2018 feeling fantastic.

The reality for too many of us though is that despite having the best intentions, most will pack in the healthy lifestyle change within the month.

It isn’t surprising given we are in the middle of winter, but we are here to help give you some extra motivation in sticking with it and why it is so worth doing!

Losing weight, feeling better and having a new lease on life are as good a reason as any to make a lifestyle change, but did you know that your eyesight also stands to reap the rewards for your health kick?

All the changes you are making to lead a healthy lifestyle can promote better eyesight and can even help you avoid or minimise sight loss from many age-related eye conditions.

This is fantastic as keeping our eyes healthy is vital to maintaining our vision, and goes a long way in helping us live a rich and better life for longer.

Eating well and having a balanced diet is a great way we can all help ourselves maintain our vision for longer.

A well balanced diet with foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc and vitamins C and E can help with age-related vision problems including macular degeneration.

The best way to get these into your body is to eat leafy greens, oily fish, eggs, nuts, beans, citrus fruits and meat such as pork as they are all brilliant sources of the good stuff!

Avoiding or cutting out harmful habits can also go a long way to prevent any damage to your vision.

Smoking is extremely hazardous you your health, but did you also know it can have serious lasting damage on your vision?

In fact, smokers are up to four times as likely to develop macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness in the UK, when compared to those who don’t smoke or have ditched the habit.

While it is difficult, it really is worth the extra effort to quit smoking for the overall health benefits.

Having regular sight tests is essential to preserve a person’s vision for as long as possible.

As we age our eyes are more susceptible to conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration. Having your vision checked by a Visioncall Optician can help to avoid or minimise sight loss from these problems.

For those over 70, being the majority of people we assist daily, it is recommended that you have a sight test annually.

Anyone under the age of 70 should have their vision tested every two years.

This applies even if you feel your vision is fine as a sight test can identify underlying health conditions, such as diabetes, early.

Keeping your eyes healthy throughout all stages of life is also important to preserve your sight for as long as possible.

Leading a healthy lifestyle is an excellent way to help you achieve this and we hope this helps to keep you motivated this month and throughout the year.
